Valerie M. Mabrey

Profile

Valerie has over ten years of public accounting experience. Valerie ’s background includes audit, review and compilation services for a variety of business industries including manufacturing, service, construction and not-for-profit organizations. Valerie also had a broad knowledge and experience in all facets of income taxation including providing tax services for individuals, corporation, partnerships, estates and trusts.

As a leader of the audit team, Valerie is responsible for the efficient conduct of all aspects of the audit process, including supervision of audit staff; completion of fieldwork; preparation of financial statements, tax returns and management letters; and presentations to clients, their boards and executive committees.

Valerie obtains a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional education each year with focus on a wide variety of issues.

Matthew A. Turner

Profile

Mr. Turner is an in-charge accountant supervising audits, reviews and compilations as well as preparing the related financial statements and income tax returns for clients in varied industries. Mr. Turner has over six years of public accounting experience working with small to mid-sized companies and their owners.

Mr. Turner also supervises and performs audits for retirement plans for small to large size plans as well as government compliance and preparation of the related Form 5500.

Mr. Turner is experienced, as well, in planning and performing audits of overhead rate schedules in accordance with Federal Acquisition Regulations for engineering firms who bid on governmental contracts.

Mr. Turner assists clients with all their reporting requirements relating to estates and trusts, including filing inventories and annual accounting statements with various Commissioners of Accounts in the State of Virginia and filing estate tax and annual income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service.

Mr. Turner obtains a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional education each year with focus on a wide variety of issues.

Joshua Sheffey, CPA

Profile

Mr. Sheffey has been with the firm since 2007 and had three years experience in private accounting prior to that time. Mr. Sheffey has experience in planning and performing audits (including an investment advisory firm with over $440 million of assets under management) in varied industries and consults with clients related to all aspects of accounting – general ledger, balance sheet, income statement, payroll, sales tax, etc. Mr. Sheffey has extensive knowledge of Peachtree, Quickbooks and other tax and accounting software packages.

Mr. Sheffey obtains a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional education each year with focus on a wide variety of issues.

Jessica Baker, CPA

Profile

Mrs. Baker has been with the firm for five years and worked in accounting and information systems for four years prior to joining the firm. As a staff accountant, Mrs. Baker is an assistant on audits, reviews and compilations for varied companies including DOL audits. Mrs. Baker also prepares income tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts and retirement plans.

Prior to joining Spencer, Hager & Mosdell, P.C., Mrs. Baker performed various duties including payroll, reconciliations, designed and maintained departmental websites, provided technical support for 15 computers (windows and apple), and managed the department’s backup system.

Mrs. Baker obtains a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional education each year with focus on a wide variety of issues.
